Leonardo da Vinci sketched a flying machine more than 500 years ago. Of course, he never got it off the ground.

Four hundred years later, The Jetsons made flying cars look like just another Tuesday — push a button, hop in, zip to work. Everyone loved the idea. But nobody thought it was real.

And when it finally started to look real, it came with a price tag nobody could touch. The aircraft flying today cost as much as a house — sometimes several. A flying car that only a few hundred people on earth can afford isn't transport. It's a trophy.

A company called AirCar decided to build the affordable one.

02 — Meet the LightSportBuilt, then flown

AirCar spent eight years in research and development before it accepted a single pre-order. No crowdfunding video, no waitlist for a design that didn't exist yet. Engineering first.

The flagship is the AirCar LightSport — a two-seat electric aircraft that takes off straight up, like a helicopter, then flies forward. No runway. No hangar. It is built from carbon fibre AirCar lays up itself, around 400-volt motors and batteries AirCar designs and makes itself.

And here is what separates it from every flying-car promise you've heard before: it has already flown.

Not once, for the cameras. More than 1,000 manned test flights — many of them with the founder in the pilot's seat.

Ten full-scale prototypes have been built. All ten flew. Then the buyers arrived: 250 reservations and counting, 100 of them in the first week, worth $25 million in deposit-backed pre-orders.

Who's making it happen?

Here's the question worth asking about any bold claim: who's making it happen, and do they actually make anything?

AirCar is an original equipment manufacturer. That's an unglamorous phrase for an unusual fact: it owns every component of its aircraft, from the carbon fibre to the motors to the 400-volt battery packs. Nothing critical is bought in, marked up and bolted on.

That's what brings the build cost down to roughly $150 per kilogram — and it's why one airframe can serve three very different markets instead of one.
